Inter-Korean Cooperation Headquarters
From July to September 2008, the Korean Church provided 500 tons of flour and 100 tons of fertilizer worth 500 million won through World Vision and South-North Sharing to address North Korea's severe food crisis. This led Korean Diakonia (KD) to establish the Inter-Korean Cooperation Headquarters to carry out dedicated service and ministry for North Korean compatriots. Through this headquarters, KD conducts specific programs including nutritional support for mothers and infants in North Korea, resident support during disasters, and cooperation with domestic and international organizations and NGOs for North Korean resident assistance.
Nutritional Support for Pregnant Women and Infants in North Korea
According to a 2012 nutritional survey of North Korean children and women conducted by UN agencies and the North Korean Central Bureau of Statistics, 15.2% of children under 5 are underweight, 27.9% suffer from chronic malnutrition, and 4% are in acute malnutrition — with malnutrition being a major factor in under-5 mortality. Additionally, 31.2% of pregnant women show anemia, and dietary intake is skewed toward specific food groups, indicating severe deficiency in multiple micronutrients.
The Nutritional Support Program for Pregnant Women and Infants in North Korea provides fortified cereal and nutritional biscuits rich in milk powder, complex vitamins, and minerals to vulnerable pregnant women and infants in North Korea, considering the importance of nutrition during the 1,000 days from conception to age two. Korean Diakonia has been cooperating as a partner organization of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) since 2016.
